What are the steps?

  1. Clear any outstanding traffic fines on Absher.
  2. Get a certified Arabic translation of your licence.
  3. Complete an eye and medical test at an approved clinic.
  4. Book a licensing appointment through Absher. Walk-ins are often refused.
  5. Attend with your Iqama, original licence, translation and photos.
  6. Pay the fee and collect your licence when you are told it is ready.

Will I need a driving test?

It depends on where your licence comes from. UK and US holders have generally been able to convert, while Indian licences have not been directly exchangeable. Others may be sent to a Saudi driving school for an assessment. Requirements change, so confirm your country's status before paying for a translation.

Can I drive before converting?

Visitors can generally drive on a valid foreign or international licence for a limited time. Once you are a resident, you need a Saudi licence. Your insurance may not pay out if you drive on the wrong document.

What should every driver know?

  • Speed and red-light cameras are everywhere, and fines appear on Absher.
  • Report any accident through Najm, or call 911 where it is available.
  • Keep your insurance and vehicle registration valid.
  • Women can drive and hold licences on the same terms as men.
