How do I get my Iqama and set up Absher?
A step-by-step guide to the Saudi Iqama: work visa, medical, biometrics, Absher activation, Nafath, dependant fees and exit and re-entry visas.

Checked against official sources: November 2026
What are the steps?
- Before you travel: employer's visa approval, medical tests at an approved centre and the visa stamp.
- On arrival: fingerprints at immigration, then you receive a border number.
- First weeks: local medical if required, health insurance and Iqama issuance by your employer.
- Once you have your Iqama: register on Absher, verify at a kiosk, and set up Nafath.
What does it cost?
| Charge | Amount | Usually paid by |
|---|---|---|
| Iqama issue or renewal | about SAR 650 a year | Employer |
| Work permit levy | about SAR 800 a month | Employer |
| Dependant fee | SAR 400 per dependant a month | Resident, unless your contract says otherwise |
Figures come from published guides, and the tiers change. Absher shows what you actually owe.
How do I leave and come back?
Residents usually need an exit and re-entry visa, issued in Absher by the employer or by you if permitted. Check the expiry date and your Iqama validity before you book, and settle any traffic fines.
Can I change jobs?
The Labour Reform Initiative lets many workers transfer employer through Qiwa under defined conditions. Read your contract's notice terms first.
