What does the currency look like?
The Saudi riyal (SAR) comes in notes of 5, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 500, with coins of 1 and 2 riyals and smaller halala coins. It is pegged to the US dollar at 3.75, so dollars convert predictably. Use our currency converter for other currencies.
Where do I change money?
Banks and exchange counters such as Enjaz and Tahweel Al Rajhi give better rates than airport kiosks. ATMs accept international cards. Check your own bank's fees, and always choose to be charged in SAR rather than your home currency.
Cash or card?
Contactless, mada, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay are accepted at almost all shops, including small ones. Carry some cash for souqs, small cafes, tips and rural areas.
Do I need to tip?
| Service | Typical |
|---|---|
| Restaurants | Optional, round up or about 10 percent |
| Hotel porters | SAR 5 to 10 |
| Ride-hailing and taxis | Round up |
| Private guides and drivers | SAR 50 to 100 a day if you were happy |
Can I haggle?
Yes, in souqs, particularly for carpets, oud, antiques and souvenirs. Start lower, stay friendly, and be willing to walk away. Malls, supermarkets and most restaurants have fixed prices.
How do I claim a VAT refund?
- Shop at a store showing tax-free signs, spending at least SAR 500.
- Keep receipts and the goods unused and available for inspection.
- Validate the claim at the refund point at a participating airport before you leave.
A service fee comes off, so you will get back less than the full 15 percent. Check that your departure airport takes part.
What do things cost?
| Item | Rough price |
|---|---|
| Bottled water | SAR 1 to 3 |
| Shawarma | SAR 6 to 15 |
| Specialty coffee | SAR 12 to 25 |
| Mid-range restaurant, per person | SAR 50 to 120 |
| Short ride-hailing trip | SAR 20 to 40 |
| Mid-range hotel, per night | SAR 300 to 700 |
These are rough planning figures. Hotels near the holy mosques climb steeply in Ramadan and Hajj.
