How do I fly within the country?

Saudia, flynas and flyadeal are the main domestic airlines, and Riyadh Air is a newer carrier, so check its current routes. Book early for AlUla and for Eid and school holidays. One-way fares are very roughly SAR 150 to 400, more at peak times. Budget airlines charge for bags.

How do I get around in cities?

Uber, Careem and Jeeny work in the main cities and show the price upfront. Riyadh's metro and buses use the Darb app, at SAR 4 for two hours. Makkah and Madinah also have public bus services, and walking is often quickest around the holy mosques.

Are buses a good option?

SAPTCO runs cheap intercity coaches. They are slow over the long distances, for example Riyadh to Jeddah is around 950 km, so fly instead if you can.

Can I hire a car?

Yes, at airports and in cities. You will need a passport, visa, valid licence and generally an International Driving Permit. Check minimum age and deposit rules with the company. Hire a 4x4 for desert tracks, and never drive off-road alone.

What should I know about driving?

  • Drive on the right, and take speed cameras seriously.
  • Fines are issued automatically.
  • Non-Muslims must follow signs diverting them around Makkah's sacred area.
  • Roads into Makkah close to vehicles without a permit in Hajj season.
