What do governments advise?
| Government | Advice at our last check |
|---|---|
| United States | Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and Level 4, Do Not Travel, near the Yemen border |
| United Kingdom | Against all travel within 10 km of the Yemen border, and all but essential travel from 10 to 80 km |
Advice can change quickly, and it can affect your insurance. Read the current version on your government's site before you travel, and sign up for your embassy's alerts. The border zone can include parts of Jazan, Asir and Najran.
Which emergency numbers should I save?
| Service | Number |
|---|---|
| Unified emergency (Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Eastern Province) | 911 |

Our tools page has one-tap dialling for these.
Which scams should I watch for?
- Fake visa sites: copycat sites charge large fees. Use only the official platform.
- Selling Rawdah or Umrah permits: these are free in Nusuk.
- Hajj on a visit visa: illegal, and a known fraud.
- Unofficial airport drivers: use the licensed taxi rank or an app.
- Unauthorised carts and guides near the Haram: agree the price first and use official counters.
- Payment links by message: Saudi Post and bank impersonation texts are common.
What is the real everyday danger?
Traffic. Speeds are high and lane discipline varies. Wear a seatbelt in every seat, cross only at lights, and be careful of cars turning fast at junctions. Avoid driving at night outside cities, because camels wander onto roads.
What about the desert?
Never go off-road with one car. Tell someone your route, carry extra water and fuel, and download offline maps. Mobile signal disappears quickly.
Is it safe for solo women?
Many women travel alone without trouble. Sit in the back of taxis, use app rides so that the trip is logged, and dress modestly. Report harassment to the police, as it is a criminal offence.
What if I get lost in the Haram?
Go to the nearest uniformed staff member or a lost-and-found point, and give your hotel name. Meet at the gate you agreed, not somewhere you think is close by.
