Which network is best?

NetworkGood for
stcThe widest coverage, including remote roads
MobilyStrong in cities and often good value
ZainCompetitive data packages in cities

All three cover Makkah and Madinah, where networks are upgraded for crowds, though speeds can still fall around peak prayer times.

Where do I buy one?

Kiosks in arrivals at major airports are easiest. Take your passport and visa, since SIMs must be registered to your identity. Biometric checks have been reported at some outlets. Shops in town can be slightly cheaper, and the staff there will activate it for you.

Should I use an eSIM instead?

Local SIMTravel eSIM

Saudi phone numberYesUsually not
Registering for local appsWorksMay fail
Price for big dataUsually betterUsually higher

Many pilgrims and families use both: an eSIM on landing, and a local SIM for longer stays. Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.

Does WhatsApp calling work?

Generally yes. Saudi Arabia lifted its general restrictions on internet calling in 2017, and WhatsApp and FaceTime calls usually connect. Quality can vary, with occasional reports of dropped calls. Messaging is unaffected. Keep a backup such as regular calling credit.

Should I use a VPN?

Avoid using a VPN to reach blocked content. The Anti-Cyber Crime Law applies to online activity, and the risk is not worth it on a short visit.

Is there free Wi-Fi?

Most hotels, cafes and malls offer it, and some airports do too. Avoid banking on public networks.
